Scope and Motivation
Smart grid can save energy, reduce costs, and increase reliability,but only if it is secured against malicious users and externalattacks. To ensure the correct functioning of the smart grid, it isessential that communications are secured, devices are protected fromphysical attack, and privacy is respected. Communications requireauthentication and confidentiality, devices require protection fromphysical attacks, and the system as a whole must be robust.Authorization will be vital to support secure remote configuration andmulti-homing scenarios. The privacy of smart grid customers may needto be protected.
Topics of Particular Interest
This symposium aims to explore mechanisms and requirements for the secure operation of smart grid,including the privacy of customers. The topics of the symposium include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Secure provisioning and management,
- Device level security, including physical security and protections against tampering,
- System level security, including survivability,
- Authorization and access control for smart grid environments,
- Novel cryptographic mechanisms suitable for smart grid environments, including key management,
- Network security, including availability and issues related to wireless mesh networks, and
- Privacy of user data.
